Adapted Crutches made walk to a man with right hand amputee and left leg fractured

A gentleman came to the Assistive Technology Department at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre to get assistance for independent walking, who has been using a prosthetic hand due to amputation right below elbow and was recently operated at Apollo hospital (New Delhi) for left ankle fracture. The challenge was to make him walk with crutches having right hand prosthetic defected and left leg not weight wearing for 8 weeks.
The full assessment was done to see the possible options available, finally we found that he would be able to use auxiliary crutches but than the issues was to grab the right side independently because he could not make a proper grip to hold the center of the crutch since his prosthetic myoelectric hand was defected due to batteries and sensors faults (which he has been using for the last 20 years)
It was not that hard but a bit cchallenging to adapt the grip the handle which he could slide the prelocked hand into the center of the crutch holder and then lock it for not to come out while walking.
See the pictures and video how a 73 years old man was able to walk and became independent with crutches instead of being wheelchair bound where he needs full assistance to be pushed.

Wheelchair Basketball

Wheelchair Basketball was originally developed by World War II veterans in the USA in 1945/1946. At the same time, Sir Ludwig Guttmann developed a similar sport named Wheelchair Netball at the Spinal Rehabilitation Hospital at Stoke Mandeville, Great Britain, to aid the rehabilitation of war veterans. When the US Wheelchair Basketball team, the Pan Am Jets, competed for the first time at the International Stoke Mandeville Games in 1955, there were no backboards owing to the British sport being Netball. This was amended for the following year's Games. Since then, the sport has developed worldwide and was introduced to the Paralympic Programme in Rome in 1960. It is one of the most popular sports in the Paralympic Games. It is designed for athletes who have a physical disability that prevents running, jumping and pivoting. Wheelchair Basketball is open to male or female athletes and is played by two teams of five players each. Depending on their functional abilities a point value from 0.5 (most severely disabled) to 4.5 is given to each player. Five players out of 12 from each team are on the court during playtime and throughout the game the total point value of each team must not exceed 14 points. The aim of each team is to score into the opponents' basket and to prevent the other team from gaining control of the ball or scoring. The measurements of the court and the height of the baskets are the same as in able-bodied Basketball. The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) is the world governing body for Wheelchair Basketball, and in 2008, the sport is practiced by athletes in around 80 countries. Delhi Marathon 2008: Wheelchair Event

There were more than 30 wheelchair participants among 25,000 others got there early this morning to run for a cause in the Delhi Marathon 2008. It was my first time to be one of them, when I started I never thought that I would be the first one who crossed the finish line within minimum time. As soon as I got there on finish line the media and lots of other people were cheering for me. It was nice to see the media attension on me and appreciation from the people.
The distance was 2.5 Km, I was able to cover the finish line in 18min and 36 sec.
My main cause to run in the Marathon was to encourage and motivate wheelchair users.
